Hello all. Last October 2008 I got my hands on a DEANS MARINE HMS FENCER kit. The kit was started by a member who put together the 17 1/96 scale sea fire aircraft and was unable to carry on due to ill health. The first thing I did was to clear the kitchen table and sort through the box and put trays of little guns and radar towers on the shelves which are normally kept for pots and pans. As the kit is so big, I lugged the hull and all the printed sheets of plastic and ply down to my dads workshop and got ready to make a start, (I had 2 smaller boats started but they were put aside). I will put some photos on here to show how I progress fingers crossed.

I thought we must have a hints and tips forum after i was listing to Jeff in the workshop. Jeff was telling me about the time he was working on one of his boats on the new mahogany dining table , he had put a tea towel down on the table and started to glue the bits to his boat and when he called Jackie in to have a look at his fine work and they both said how good a job he had done. Jeff put his bits to one side and started to clean the rubbish and put them on the table cloth to empty in to the bin. To both Jeff and Jackie's horror the tablecloth was stuck to the new mahogany table and left it stained for life.TIP: when gluing on a table or surface you don't want to ruin put a plastic bag down first and you can stick it in the bin when you have finished without leaving any stains JEFF.

She has a top speed of 25 knots, giving a faster response time, and boasts new safety features including an advanced seat design to reduce stress on the backs of volunteer crew members when they are at sea. New onboard computer controls mean remote management of many of the lifeboats functions and better task sharing amongst the crew.

Jonathan Lee, RNLI Press Officer at St. Helier, says the self-righting trial is a key moment in the new lifeboats development: ‘This self righting exercise really marks the start of our new lifeboat’s operational trials and means we are getting ever closer to the moment when she will arrive on station. Whilst we all hope that the new lifeboat will never be in the unfortunate position of capsizing, if such a terrible event should happen then at least we will know the lifeboat will right herself automatically.’

Andrew Hibbs, RNLI Coxswain at St. Helier, says: ‘It’s been a privilege to watch the St. Helier Tamar develop from a bare hull into the lifeboat that will help us save lives at sea in Island waters and all of us on the crew are just overwhelmed at the support from Islanders in raising the money to make this possible.’

As a registered charity, the RNLI relies on voluntary contributions and legacies to ensure its volunteer crews have the very best lifeboats, equipment and training to help them save lives at sea.

Jersey Model Boats.com members pictures taken on board the George Sullivan 7th July 2009.

Lets start with the Heart.

Twin 1001 HP Caterpillar Turbocharged diesels, 18 litres each.

The Harbour Gallery Boat Exhibition started today Saturday the 11th of April and will run until Monday 13th finishing at 4.30.. Roger and I had 25 boats on show upstairs in the Harbour Gallery. The hope was that a few members of the public would join us on a 9 week course on boat building for beginners. Roger and I had no idea that it would be so popular and this kept us on our toes. We spoke to locals as well as the holiday makers and most of the public found the models on display fascinating. The detail on the boats close up was the main point of conversation, with HMS Fencer on display with the plans on the walls and the Guns, Seafires, and the flight deck island all on the display. Roger's collection of boats was superb with at least 14 finished boats and 5 or 6 kits for the public to see how cheaply you can start up the hobby. We had some interest in the course once the public the seen the starter kits.JMBC (www.Jerseymodelboats.com)cards were handed ( 175 ) out to every one who was interested in the boats, as all of the boats on display are on the website.

I found this clipping from the Port strategy dated 1st june 2005 and through it held all the useful information and details about the Duke of Normandy.

Jersey Harbours in the UK Channel Islands have a sophisticated new flagship, a 26 metre Damen Shoalbuster tug designed to undertake a wide range of duties. The new vessel replaces the 33 year-old tug DUKE OF NORMANDY, built for towage and general port maintenance duties in 1972. The new vessel is destined to bear the same name and intended to transform and extend the services undertaken by Jersey Harbours. With four times the power of the earlier tug, the new vessel is one of the new generation of Damen Shoalbuster 2609 vessels with a good towing performance and a wide range of facilities for lifting and dredging with a towed plough. A twin-screw shallow draft vessel of 26.02 metres with a beam of 9.10 metres, the tug will be fitted with two Caterpillar 3508B TA main engines producing a total of 2,200 bhp. In keeping with other vessels of its type it will have a powerful 140 tonnes/metre hydraulic crane, a large clear working deck, stern roller and bow thruster.

The new DUKE OF NORMANDY will be capable of assisting the new breed of large ferries to berth in bad weather and deal with emergencies such as drifting vessels and oil pollution around the Channel Islands. With its shallow draft, the tug will be able to approach casualties in danger of grounding to make a towing connection, unlike larger tugs from France and the UK that are often of limited use in the shallow local waters. Major savings are expected, particularly in the maintenance of buoys and seamarks, dredging and general port maintenance tasks. Equipment will be fitted to enable the vessel, using her crane, to lift and replace buoys and their sinkers much more efficiently than before. During buoy handling and similar operations the new tug will use substantially less manpower and obviate the need to hire in resources from Trinity House and elsewhere. The tug is also expected to earn revenue by carrying out charter work and similar tasks for the other islands.

Using the tug to carry out dredging is expected to result in a decrease in the frequency of major harbour dredging operations. The towed plough will enable bed levelling and silt to be moved out through the harbour entrance. It is anticipated that the need to dredge St Helier harbour will be reduced to every 15 years instead of the present 10.

On announcing the order Deputy Harbour Master Captain Peter Moore said: "When we went out to tender some 13 yards approached us but it was not difficult to choose the Damen proposal. The Shoalbuster is a tried and proven design and so 95 % of the new DUKE is virtually off the shelf, saving us both time and money. Some crew retraining and familiarisation will be carried out, initially at the Damen yard and local shipping companies Commodore and Huelin Renouf have readily agreed to co-operate with us in practising berthing large vessels."
